Longshan Temple fortune drawing and this virtual experience

What do the moon blocks and fortune stick tube represent? Here is how the Guanyin fortune ritual works according to Longshan Temple’s own guide, and how this online version differs.

How the ritual is performed at Longshan Temple

  1. Worship first and choose one question

Pay respects to the deities in order. At the fortune stick tube in the Sanchuan Hall, tell Guanyin your name, birthday, current address, and the matter you wish to ask about. Ask one question per fortune slip.

  2. Ask permission with the moon blocks

Cast the pair of blocks. A shengjiao permits you to draw a stick. After a xiaojiao, state your question again and recast. A yinjiao means permission to draw was not granted.

  3. Draw a numbered stick

Select one stick, note its number, and return it to the tube. The temple’s guide asks visitors not to pull the stick completely out of the tube.

  4. Confirm the number three times

Ask whether this is the intended number. Three consecutive shengjiao confirm it. If either other result appears, draw a new number from the tube.

  5. Read the matching fortune poem

Take the poem matching the confirmed number from the fortune slip cabinet. You can ask at the interpretation desk if you need help understanding it.

What are the moon blocks and their three outcomes?

Jiaobei, also called poe, are a pair of crescent-shaped wooden blocks. The combination of flat and rounded sides showing after a cast is read as an answer to a question.

Shengjiao (聖筊) One flat and one rounded side
An affirmative answer: permission to draw a stick or confirmation of its number.
Xiaojiao (笑筊) Two flat sides
The answer is not yet settled. When asking permission, state the question again before another cast.
Yinjiao (陰筊) Two rounded sides
A negative answer. Permission to draw is refused, or a proposed number must be drawn again.

Why confirm the number?

The first affirmative cast gives permission to draw; it does not approve the number you later select. Casting again asks whether that particular poem is the one to receive. Longshan Temple’s guide requires three affirmative casts in a row to confirm the number.

How the virtual version differs

This page generates the number and block outcomes at random. Quick mode is our shortened version, confirming a number after one affirmative cast. Strict mode simulates the three consecutive confirmations, but neither mode replaces worship or casting physical blocks at the temple. The online flow lets you retry after a negative permission result; at the temple, the official guide says that result does not grant permission to draw.
